Cannes movie competition has introduced its 2023 slate, with Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City and the Weeknd’s HBO present The Idol among the many choices. The latter, helmed by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and starring Abel Tesfaye alongside Lily-Rose Depp, was beset by delays and rumored fallout behind the scenes. It can play, eventually, below the Official Choice Out of Competitors banner, alongside Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and James Mangold’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Future.
Among the many premieres in competitors is Jonathan Glazer’s long-awaited follow-up to the 2013 cult traditional Below the Pores and skin. His new movie, Zone of Curiosity, tailored from Martin Amis’ e book of the identical title, is a couple of Nazi officer who falls in love with the spouse of the commander of a focus camp. (Pitchfork has enquired as as to whether Mica Levi reunited with Glazer for the score.) And recent from his Velvet Underground documentary, Todd Haynes is premiering a romantic drama, Could December, starring Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton.
Wim Wenders, Ken Loach, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Nanni Moretti, and Aki Kaurismäki may also display new movies in competitors on the competition. One other WWII movie, the documentary Occupied Metropolis from 12 Years a Slave director Steve McQueen, is among the many Particular Screenings. The Idol was co-created and co-written by Sam Levinson, the Weeknd, and Reza Fahim; after some personnel modifications halfway into manufacturing, Levinson directed the collection.
